Be sure that your next envelope project uses envelope paper from responsibly managed forests. You could include the FSC or PEFC logo printed upon your envelope and send the right message to your clients.

FSC or PEFC? What's the difference?

Unlike FSC, PEFC does not set specific standards but is an umbrella brand that incorporates different national forest certification schemes (e.g. the national scheme in Finland is endorsed by the PEFC). This is intended to make the forest certification easier and more applicable to different types of forests. In essence, both schemes promote documenting and improving sustainable forestry in terms of economical, ecological and social standards.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. Members of the FSC include representatives from environmental and social groups, the timber trade and the forestry profession, indigenous people's organizations, community forestry groups and forest product certification organizations from around the world. FSC certified forests are responsibly managed according to set standards. The goal is to improve forest conservation and reduce deforestation. The FSC certification indicates that the wood product is verified and tracked through its various stages and into its final state according to strict standards. Forests provide clean water, fresh air, food, medicine and important natural resources, such as timber and paper. If managed responsibly, forests and plantations benefit both forest people and the global community. FSC certification is a key initiative that promotes accountability in international forest administration. Learn more about FSC at www.fsc.org.

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)

PEFC was established in 1999 and is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) through independent third-party certification. PEFC International is an umbrella organisation that endorses national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions.

PEFC works throughout the entire forest supply chain to promote good practice in the forest and to ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Thanks to its eco-label, customers and consumers are able to identify products from sustainably managed forests.

PEFC bases its understanding of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) on the definition adopted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and originally developed by Forest Europe, which defines SFM as:

"The stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions, at local, national, and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other ecosystems."
